Why a School for Girls?

St. Anne’s School provides an exceptional program that establishes the foundation for lifelong learning and future success. • develop strategies to set and achieve goals while leveraging skills to embrace challenges and recover from setbacks

QuoteGirls’ education engages, empowers, and best prepares young women to fulfill their roles in the world. We know that girls’ schools foster higher academic achievement, greater diversity of subject choice, and stronger self-confidence. At St. Anne’s, we are committed to supporting girls’ unique developmental needs and celebrating their strengths so every student can see themselves in the curriculum and find a sense of purpose.”

– Samantha Scheepers, Associate Director, Academics

The St. Anne’s community is committed to looking carefully at how we educate girls. As a progressive, supportive, and innovative community, we believe that girls’ education engages, empowers, and prepares young women to fulfill their roles in the world. When we address the specific needs of girls, it allows them to excel. Girls’ schools foster higher academic achievement, greater diversity of subject choice, stronger self-confidence and resilience, and enhanced career progression (Girls’ Day School Trust, 2022). As stated by the International Coalition of Girls’ Schools (ICGS), “Schools are places where girls take centre stage and can see themselves in all roles, sending the message that there is nothing that a girl can’t accomplish.” At St. Anne’s School, we have designed our programming with the evidence-based best practice of girls’ needs in mind, ensuring our students can see themselves in the curriculum, value collaboration, and are provided freedom and a variety of choices in their academic and co-curricular pursuits.

At girls’ schools, students can be leaders in all facets of school life: 87% of students at girls’ schools feel their voices and opinions are respected compared to 58% of girls at co-ed schools (ICGS). At St. Anne’s, we intentionally foster student voice and work to have our students feel confident speaking up and out to make a difference in the classrooms and beyond. We work to embolden students and strengthen their understanding of being leaders and active citizens.

Girls’ schools are places of community and collaboration. Girls find learning memorable and engaging when working and learning together. Not only does this develop a deeper understanding of course material, it builds relationships and interpersonal awareness.

We are also leading the way in STEAM education. Graduates of girls’ schools are six times more likely to consider majoring in math, science, and technology and three times more likely to consider engineering than girls at co-ed schools (ICGS). At St. Anne’s, we celebrate STEAM through our signature programming in Design Technology and robotics and ensure our students have strong, positive role models to challenge societal stereotypes or expectations.

In the 2022 Girls’ Futures Report, the Girls’ Day School Trust (GDST) reports that the No. 1 issue girls report is mental health. As a school for girls, we are committed to student well-being and holistic growth, with a specific eye to supporting the needs of girls. We value care and balance and help girls develop strategies to embrace challenges and recover from setbacks.

As a community, we are committed to continue engaging in professional development and informing our practice to build a foundation of self-discovery, spark a passion for learning, and prepare girls to build a better world.
Empowering girls to be courageous learners and compassionate citizens who live and lead with wisdom.
