On Monday, Sept. 30, the St. Anne’s community came together to observe Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, wearing orange shirts to symbolize solidarity and remembrance. This important day offered an opportunity to reflect on the enduring impact of residential schools in Canada and to honour the survivors and the children who never returned home.
The week leading up to Orange Shirt Day was marked by meaningful discussions and activities designed to educate students and staff about the history and legacy of residential schools. Lessons emphasized the resilience, bravery, and survivance of Indigenous Peoples while encouraging a deeper understanding of our collective responsibility to foster reconciliation and value Indigenous cultures.
“Our commitment to reconciliation is about more than wearing an orange shirt—it’s about listening, learning, and acting in ways that honour the truths of our shared history,” said Sabrina D’Angelo, Head of School. “This day reminds us to confront difficult truths and work toward a better, more inclusive future.”
A poignant moment of the week was the Community Gathering, where students’ voices joined in a heartfelt commemoration. The gathering paid tribute to survivors and the families forever impacted by residential schools through reflections, poems, and shared stories.
Orange Shirt Day, recognized nationally since 2021, originated from the experiences of Phyllis Webstad, a residential school survivor whose orange shirt was taken from her on her first day at school, symbolizing the loss of culture and identity endured by many. The day serves as a powerful reminder that “Every Child Matters.”
The St. Anne’s community remains committed to honouring this truth and embracing actions that advance reconciliation. Thank you to all students and staff for participating in this important day of reflection and for continuing to foster awareness and understanding within our school.
